A complete guide for new parents in Guelph, Toronto, and the GTA.

Welcoming a new baby is one of the most extraordinary moments of your life.
And naturally, parents have a million questions about newborn photography — especially if it’s their first time booking a session.

This guide brings together the most frequently asked newborn photography questions online (from Google, ChatGPT, parenting forums, Instagram) and answers them simply, clearly, and with the experience of photographing over 2,000 newborns from 90+ countries.

Whether you’re 38 weeks pregnant or already holding your tiny miracle, this post will walk you through everything you need to know.

Family

1. When is the best time to take newborn photos?

The ideal window is between 5 and 12 days old.
Why?

Because in the first two weeks:

  • babies are sleepier
  • their bodies curl naturally into womb-like positions
  • their skin is smoother
  • feeding + digestion patterns are more predictable

But here’s the truth that most parents should realize:

Every baby is different.

Weight, feeding, medical recovery, C-section vs. vaginal birth — everything matters.

❤️ If your baby is already 2–3-4-5-6 weeks old, don’t panic.
We can still create beautiful images. They may be more awake and expressive — and those photos are just as meaningful.

2. How long does a newborn session take?

Most newborn sessions last 1.5 to 3 hours.

Why so long?

Because babies call the shots.
We pause for:

  • feeding
  • burping
  • diaper changes
  • cuddles
  • soothing
  • settling

A newborn session is never rushed.
It’s calm, warm, quiet… almost like a spa day for your baby.

3. What should my baby wear for newborn photos?

Nothing. Truly.

Newborn photography uses:

  • wraps
  • swaddles
  • bonnets
  • soft fabrics
  • tiny outfits
  • neutrals and textures

Your photographer provides everything.

In our Guelph studio, we have a full wardrobe of:

✔ organic knits
✔ handmade bonnets
✔ luxury wraps
✔ gender-neutral setups
✔ soft whites, creams, beiges, taupes

Your only job?
Bring the baby. We take care of the rest:))

4. Can parents and siblings join the session?

Absolutely — and they should.

Parent portraits are often the most meaningful images we create, because:

  • babies grow
  • memories fade
  • photographs stay

Siblings are included too — whether they’re toddlers or teens.
We typically photograph siblings first so they can relax, play, or head home afterward.

5. Is it safe? How do you keep newborns safe during the photosession?

Safety is the foundation of professional newborn photography.

We use:

  • trained newborn-handling techniques
  • constant spotting
  • temperature-controlled rooms
  • sanitized fabrics
  • soft, supported posing
  • NEVER forcing babies into a pose
  • composite editing for advanced poses

If baby isn’t comfortable, we don’t do the pose.
Safety always comes before the photo.\

6. What if my baby doesn’t sleep?

Then we photograph them awake. However, we have tons of tactics to make them sleep:) We have photographed over 2.000+ babies – you’re in good hands.

Some of the most stunning newborn portraits are:

  • soft-eyed
  • curious
  • expressive
  • alert
  • full of personality

We work with however your baby shows up, not against them.

7. What should parents wear for newborn photos?

To keep the portraits timeless and elegant, we recommend:

✔ Light neutrals: white, cream, beige, soft grey
✔ Simple textures
✔ No logos, bold patterns, or neon colors
✔ Flowing dresses for moms
✔ Casual, soft layers for dads

We also have a curated client wardrobe available in the studio. We will send you a client guide to make everything stress-free.

8. Can we request specific poses or Pinterest ideas?

Yes — with professional guidance.

We always prioritize:

  • baby’s safety
  • baby’s comfort
  • your family’s aesthetic

If a specific pose isn’t safe or suitable for your baby’s age/weight, we’ll offer a beautiful alternative.

9. Do you provide props?

Yes.
The studio is fully equipped with:

  • wooden bowls
  • soft blankets
  • textured wraps
  • baskets
  • pillows
  • headbands
  • bonnets
  • posing supports

You don’t need to bring anything unless you want to include something personal (like a blanket from Grandma or a family heirloom).

10. How many photos do we get?

This depends on the session you choose.

Most families choose between 10–20 edited digital & printed images, albums with 30 photos, wallarts, folio boxes with the option to add more.
A curated gallery of the best images will be shared, and you select your favourites to be retouched.

11. Do you edit the photos?

Yes — newborn editing is detailed and delicate.

We adjust:

  • skin redness
  • flakes
  • newborn acne
  • color tones
  • background cleanup

But we never erase what makes your baby your baby.

12. Do you share unedited photos?

No — professional newborn photographers do not provide unedited or raw galleries.
We curate the best images and then fully retouch your chosen favourites.

13. How should we prepare for the newborn session?

Here’s the simplest prep list:

✔ Feed baby right before leaving home (or as soon as you arrive)
✔ Bring extra bottles (even if breastfeeding – just in case)
✔ Bring a pacifier (even if you don’t use)
✔ Dress baby in something easy to remove
✔ Stay calm — babies feel your energy

We provide everything else.

14. Can we still do newborn photos if my baby is older (3–6 weeks)?

Yes!
We simply adjust the style.

Older newborn sessions focus more on:

  • eye contact
  • stretched poses
  • expressions
  • parent snuggles
  • wrapped setups

They’re just as beautiful — simply different.

15. How far in advance should we book?

Most families book during the second trimester to secure availability.
But we always keep a few openings for early or late arrivals — and last-minute babies too.
