Best Time for Newborn Photos (And Why Timing Matters)

Best Time for Newborn Photos in Ontario | Expert Guide

Newborn

One of the first questions parents ask us is:

“When is the best time for newborn photos?”

And the honest answer is, there is an ideal window, but there’s also a lot of flexibility when you’re working with the right photographer.

Let’s break it down in a way that actually makes sense.

The Ideal Window: 5–12 Days Old

For classic newborn photography, those sleepy, curled-up poses you see on our website — the ideal time is between 5 and 12 days after birth.

Here’s why:

  • Babies are still naturally sleepy
  • They curl easily into womb-like positions
  • They’re less sensitive to movement
  • Their skin is typically clearer
  • Sessions are gentler and shorter

This window allows us to create the soft, timeless images most families fall in love with.

What If My Baby Arrives Early or Late?

This happens all the time, and it’s completely okay.

We never lock newborn sessions to a single date. Instead, we reserve space around your due date, then adjust once your baby arrives.

If your baby comes early, needs extra care, or if you need more time to recover, we adapt the session style to suit your family beautifully.

Your comfort always comes first.

Can You Still Do Newborn Photos After 2 Weeks?

Yes, and we do them often.

After the two-week mark, sessions naturally evolve:

  • Different poses
  • More wrapped/swaddled photos
  • More connection with parents

But you never know until the session starts. We had babies 45 days old, slept like a 5-day-old baby, and we had 8-day-old babies gave us a hard time like a 3-month-old baby:)

Our Approach: Gentle, Flexible, Stress-Free

We photograph one newborn per day so there’s never rushing.
We allow extra time for feeding, cuddling, and breaks.
And we guide you through everything — you don’t need to know what to do.

Because newborn photography shouldn’t feel like pressure.
It should feel like care.

Planning Tip (Most Parents Miss This)

The best time to book your newborn session is during pregnancy, ideally in your second or early third trimester.

This guarantees availability and removes one more decision from your postpartum weeks.
