Newborn Baby

If you’re expecting a baby, you’re probably hearing it from every direction:

“Book your newborn photos early!”
“Make sure they’re done in the first two weeks!”
“Don’t miss the window!”

And honestly?
That pressure can feel like one more thing added to the never-ending list of things you need to “get right” as new parents.

Take a breath.
You’re doing amazing.

This guide will walk you through the real answer, based on years of experience photographing hundreds of newborns across Guelph, Toronto, Kitchener, Waterloo, Cambridge, and the GTA.

The Ideal Time: 5–21 Days Old

This is the age sweet spot where:

✔ Babies are sleepier
✔ They curl naturally into womb-like poses
✔ Skin is usually smooth and soft
✔ Feeding/sleeping rhythms are just starting, so they settle well

This is how we create those dreamy, peaceful, curled-up portraits you see in our portfolio.

But the truth is — it’s not a magical rule. It’s simply an age range where newborns are naturally more cooperative.

But Here’s the Part Most Parents Don’t Hear:

There is no such thing as “too late.”

Some babies arrive early.
Some arrive late.
Some have long hospital stays.
Some parents need extra recovery time.
Some are simply too exhausted to think about scheduling photos (which is normal, bro).

And guess what?

We photograph newborns up to 6 weeks old — beautifully.

The vibe is different — less curled-up posing, more awake moments, more personality —
but the photos?
Still timeless. Still emotional. Still unforgettable.

So if you’re reading this with a 3-week-old, 5-week-old, or even older baby,
you haven’t missed anything.
You’re right on time for your baby.

Why the First 3 Weeks Work So Beautifully

1. Sleepy = Dreamy Poses

Newborns spend more time in deep sleep, which makes transitions easier.

2. They Still Curl Naturally

They comfortably settle into those cozy, womb-like poses.

3. Fewer Baby Acne / Colic Episodes

Around 3–5 weeks, newborn acne can start. Not always, but often.

4. Parents Are Still in the “These Are the Tiniest Hands I’ve Ever Seen” Phase

And trust me — you’ll want those tiny details documented.

But What About Older Newborns?

They’re incredible too — just in a different way.

Babies 4–6 Weeks Old:

  • Make stronger eye contact
  • Stretch their little arms and legs
  • Start showing expression
  • Have sweet awake shots
  • Cuddle beautifully with mom and dad

You get storytelling moments instead of curled poses — and many families love that.

When Should You Book Your Session?

This is the part most people don’t know:

You book based on your due date, not the actual birth date.

We reserve a flexible spot on our calendar and then confirm once your baby arrives.

Because newborns don’t follow calendars.
Or rules.
Or Google.

We see you, little rebels. 😅

Is There Ever a “Wrong Time”?

No.

There are only different types of sessions depending on your baby’s age:

Baby’s AgeWhat to Expect
5–14 DaysSleepy, curled, classic newborn poses
15–21 DaysMix of sleepy + lightly awake portraits
3–6 WeeksMore awake moments, expressive photos, cuddly parent shots

Every stage has its own magic.

How to Know What’s Best for Your Family

Ask yourself:

  • Do you love curled poses? → Book early.
  • Want awake, expressive photos? → Later is great.
  • Healing from birth? → No rush.
  • Overwhelmed? → We’ll guide you.
  • Baby already here? → We can still book you.

There is no wrong choice — only the one that fits your season of life.

The Most Important Part?

Your baby will only be this small once.

Whether they’re 7 days old or 6 weeks old, what matters is capturing this fleeting chapter before it changes again.

Years from now, when they’re running through the house with sticky fingers and wild hair, you’ll look back at these tiny moments and feel everything all over again.

And that’s why newborn photography exists.
