We first photographed Fraser as a newborn, then his first birthday. Years later came his baby sister Ainslie, her newborn session, her first birthday, and now a beautiful autumn family session. A story about growing up, family legacy, and why the photographs we create today become the heirlooms we treasure tomorrow.
There are families we photograph once.
And then there are families whose story keeps unfolding in front of our cameras.
Fraser and Ainslie’s family has become one of those stories for us.
We first met them when Fraser was tiny enough to fit almost entirely in his parents’ arms.
Then came his first birthday.
Then another baby.
Another newborn session.
Another first birthday.
And now, years after that very first photograph, we found ourselves outside together on a beautiful autumn evening, photographing the four of them as a family.
Same people.
Completely different chapter.
And that is exactly why we believe so deeply in family photography.
Not because every year needs another perfectly posed photograph.
Because life changes when you’re not looking.
And one day, the photographs that seemed ordinary when you took them become the ones you would give anything to step back into.

Our story with this family began with Fraser’s newborn session.
Those first newborn photographs always have a kind of magic to them.
Everything is new.
The parents are still discovering this tiny person.
The baby is changing almost daily.
Hands are impossibly small.
Expressions come and go in seconds.
You take a photograph and, even a few weeks later, the baby in that image already feels different.
At the time, you’re simply trying to survive the sleepless nights, figure out feeding schedules and remember what day it is.
You don’t necessarily realize that you’re standing inside one of the chapters you’re going to miss the most.
That’s the funny thing about memories.
You rarely know which ordinary day will become precious until it’s already gone.
So we photographed Fraser small.
Wrapped up.
Held close.
Safe in the arms of the people who loved him most.
And then life did what life always does.
It moved.

A year sounds long when you’re waiting for something.
It feels incredibly short when you’re raising a baby.
Before long, Fraser was back in front of our cameras for his first birthday.
The tiny newborn was gone.
Now there was personality.
Movement.
Curiosity.
Laughter.
Those little expressions parents instantly recognize.
This is why we love photographing the first birthday after a newborn session.
Put those two galleries beside one another and you can almost see time.
Newborn Fraser.
One-year-old Fraser.
Same child.
Completely different little person.
That first year is enormous.
And then their family story changed again.
Another baby.
Another newborn chapter.
This time Fraser wasn’t only the baby we once photographed.
He was a big brother.
That shift is one of our favourite things to witness.
The child who once fit into the little newborn setups is suddenly standing beside them, looking down at the newest member of the family.
And now it was Ainslie’s turn.
Her newborn photographs became the beginning of her own visual story.
Tiny details.
The way her parents held her.
The relationship beginning between brother and sister.
The family changing from three to four.
And before anyone was really ready for it…
she turned one too.

When you photograph a family across several years, the individual sessions stop feeling separate.
They start connecting.
Fraser’s newborn session wasn’t just a newborn session anymore.
It became the first chapter.
His birthday photographs became the next.
Then Ainslie arrived.
Then her birthday.
And now we have this incredible timeline of a family becoming who they are today.
That is what a Family Legacy Session means to us.
It isn’t simply another appointment in the calendar.
It is choosing, intentionally, to document the evolution of your family.
Because the version of your family that exists today has never existed before.
And it will never exist in exactly the same way again.

This time, there were no newborn wraps.
No first birthday cake.
No tiny baby sleeping peacefully while the adults whispered around them.
Instead, there were two growing children.
Movement.
Personality.
Sibling moments.
Parents who had already travelled through so many stages since we first photographed them.
And all around them, the colours of an Ontario autumn.
Fall family photography has a completely different energy from studio newborn portraits.
Children get to move.
Explore.
Run.
Laugh.
Parents can hold hands, walk together and forget about the camera for a little while.
The leaves are changing.
The light gets softer.
Everything feels temporary.
Which, when you think about it, makes autumn a pretty perfect metaphor for family life.
Beautiful because it changes.
Beautiful because it doesn’t last.

We use the words Make It Count a lot.
But it doesn’t mean filling your life with photoshoots.
It means recognizing the chapters that matter while you’re still living inside them.
There will always be a reason to wait.
Maybe next year.
When the kids are easier.
When everyone’s schedule settles down.
When you lose a few pounds.
When life is less busy.
When the weather is better.
When you have more time.
But family life doesn’t wait for any of those things.
Kids grow while you’re working.
They grow while you’re answering emails.
They grow during school mornings and soccer practices and bedtime routines.
They grow while you’re worrying about all the things that feel incredibly important today and probably won’t matter ten years from now.
Photography gives you a way to say:
This mattered.
This version of us mattered.
This season mattered.
These people, exactly as they were right here, mattered.
There is something interesting about professional family photographs.
Their value almost works backwards.
On the day you receive them, you love them because they’re beautiful.
Five years later, you love them because everyone looks younger.
Ten years later, you start noticing things you barely noticed before.
A missing tooth.
The way your child held your hand.
Your partner’s expression.
The sweater someone always wore.
The little habits you had completely forgotten.
Twenty years later?
The photograph itself becomes something entirely different.
It becomes history.
Not history in the grand, museum sense.
Your history.
The one that matters to your family.
That is why we believe photographs are heirlooms long before they become old.
This is the part I always come back to.
One day, Fraser and Ainslie will be adults.
They’ll see themselves as newborns.
They’ll see those first birthdays.
They’ll see themselves running through fall leaves together.
They’ll see how young their parents looked.
They’ll see the way their parents held them.
And without anyone needing to explain it, they’ll understand something incredibly important:
We were loved.
We were worth remembering.
Our childhood mattered enough for someone to preserve it.
That is a pretty extraordinary gift to give your children.

Parents sometimes tell us they’re booking the session “for the children.”
I understand that.
But I don’t think that’s completely true.
You’re also doing it for the version of yourself that exists years from now.
The version of you who would love one more afternoon with your five-year-old.
One more chance to pick up the toddler who eventually became too heavy to carry.
One more ordinary morning when everybody still lived under the same roof.
We can’t go back.
But photographs do something remarkable.
For a second, they take us close.
One of the greatest privileges of what we do is seeing families return.
A newborn comes into our Guelph studio.
Then comes the first birthday.
Maybe another baby.
Another newborn session.
Family portraits.
Christmas photographs.
An outdoor session.
Milestones we didn’t even know were coming when we took the first photograph.
This is why we don’t really see ourselves as photographers for one day.
We want to be the people who help families build a visual history over years.
Not just photographs that look beautiful today.
Photographs that become priceless later.
You don’t need a major milestone to photograph your family.
You don’t need everybody to behave perfectly.
You don’t need matching outfits.
You don’t need your life to look finished.
Actually, I think the opposite is true.
Photograph the unfinished version.
Photograph the messy middle.
Photograph the season you’re in.
Because that is your actual family story.
And one day, the photographs you treasure most may not be from the biggest celebrations.
They may be from an ordinary autumn when your children were still small enough to run toward you.
Looking through these photographs, from Fraser’s newborn days, to his first birthday, to Ainslie joining the family, to her own first birthday, and now to this autumn chapter, feels a little like flipping through the opening pages of a book that is still being written.
There is already so much history here.
And there is still so much ahead.
More birthdays.
More seasons.
More changes.
More versions of this family that don’t exist yet.
That is the beauty of a family legacy.
You don’t create it all at once.
You build it.
One chapter at a time.
One photograph at a time.
One ordinary moment you decided was worth remembering.
Make it count.
Because the years will pass either way.
And someday, these photographs will remind you exactly what all that time was filled with.
Love.
Family.
And a story that was worth keeping.
